An exclusive
Brian Ray's interview for yellow-sub.net. |
Hi Brian! Before starting, I
want to thank you for having accepted this exclusive interview for our
website yellow-sub.net. So Brian, in a few words, could you introduce
yourself to our site visitors?
Hi everyone! Its
Brian here, glad to meet you. Looking forward to seeing my old friends of
France in the Spring Tour with Paul.
Could you tell us about your
musical career? (group, involvement)
I played with Etta
James for 14 years, Smokey Robinson, Willy Deville. With Etta I performed
with John Lee Hooker, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, John Paul Jones (Led
Zeppelin), Bo Didley, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Big Joe Turner, Rory
Gallagher. I toured with the Rolling Stones in 1978 and 1979 Some Girls
and Emotional Rescue.I also played with French singers: Mylene Farmer and
Johnny Halliday.
What are your musical tastes?
What CDs have you got at home?
Anything from Dean
Martin, Franck Sinatra to classic rock, traditional soul music, rhythm &
blues, modern rock. Some of my CDs are ones from Van Hunt, Air. I do like
the sound track of Eternal Sun Shine.
In 2002 and 2003, you
accompanied Paul McCartney during his tour over the US and Europe. Can you
tell us about your meeting with this ex-Beatle? What were your feelings when
you were confirmed you would play with him on stage?
My first meeting was
in a New-Orleans hotel where I came down for a private dinner. Paul arrived
at 8.15 p.m. with Heather. I was talking with some guys, not facing the door
but I felt Paul was entering when I saw peoples expressions in the room. I
was ready to meet him but a little nervous. He greeted a few groups of
people then he came to me and said:
- Hi! Im Paul, you must be Brian. Its a pleasure to meet you.
- Its a pleasure to meet you too.
He then sat down at a table and before eating he stood up to raise his glass
to welcome his old friends and his new friend Brian.
It was a pleasant vegetarian dinner, a wonderful, gorgeous place with red
velvet, beautiful walls painting, we were laughing, listening music.
It was the preparation for the Super Bowl. The next morning I got up, went
to the rehearsal and played FREEDOM. After the show and the game, I said
thank you, not knowing if I would see him again. Went back to the hotel and
talked and Paul said me: Thank you and welcome aboard Brian! Stick with
Rusty and Abe, theyll show you the ropes. I said to Abe, "Did he just say
what I think he said". Yes, he said! I had 5 weeks to prepare. I came home,
played guitar, bass and sang for 5 weeks to become the kind of player he was
looking for and said OK, I can do it!. I began rehearsing for the tour, I
was happy and Paul was happy too. After the first day he said: See ya
tomorrow I was in! We only had 11 days rehearsal, only 6 days with Paul
and 5 days with the band for about 40 songs.
Could you tell us about the
ambiance with the musicians during the tour?
Ive known Abe for 8
years, Rusty for 14 years and Wix was very easy to know. We were laughing
all the time. It was a very positive and supportive ambiance.
What's your best memory of
this tour with Paul McCartney?
The first night in
Oakland, where my father was raised. It was on April 1st, 2002.
On the contrary, what's the
worse (if any) memory of this tour for you?
After the end of the
first tour, the post production drop
Except having worked with
Paul McCartney, you have many performances with other artists, so amongst
all these collaborations, which was the one you most liked? and what song?
Etta James for she was
like a second mother to me and I grew up with her as a man and as a
musician. Also Johnny and Mylene in France were so important. I learned so
much with them.
Although having worked with
Paul McCartney, would you have liked to record with The Beatles? If yes, on
what song would you have liked to play with George Harrison and John Lennon?
Of course : A Day In
The Life, Helter Skelter, Within You, Without You, With A Little Help From
My Friends.
Before working with Paul,
were you a Fab Four's fan? If yes, which was your favorite song?
Of course! I was
raised with The Beatles ! From I Want To Hold Your Hand to Let It Be and
everything between.
We speak a lot about your
collaboration with Paul McCartney but in the end very few about a solo
career. So, I'd like to ask you a question: do you have any project for a
solo album, as Rusty Anderson who launched a few months ago his "Undressing
Underwater" album?
Not right now.
If it were so, would you like
Paul McCartney to offer you a song, or collaboration on your album?
Of course I would! And
I would ask him to produce it!
We thank you very much for
having given us this interview and hope to have the pleasure to see you very
soon on stage in France. We wish you good luck with this new Paul's album.
Thank you very much!
It was very sweet and kind!
Would you like to add some
